PE

Our Physical Education (PE) curriculum is meticulously designed to inspire a lifelong love for physical activity, promote health and well-being, and develop fundamental movement skills. Delivered by Blackpool Football Club and utilising the Amaven PE curriculum materials, we provide a comprehensive and coherent PE programme from the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) through Key Stages 1 and 2, ensuring a progressive journey for all pupils.

Early Years Foundation Stage

In EYFS, we introduce children to physical activity through engaging stories and semi-structured activities that encourage child-led learning. Our programme, delivered through the 'Wonderful World of Bertie Bunny,' provides unique stories and physical development sessions that align with the Early Learning Goals. This approach fosters fundamental movement skills, coordination, and a positive attitude towards physical activity.

Key Stage 1

Building on the foundations of EYFS, our KS1 curriculum focuses on developing fundamental movement skills, including agility, balance, and coordination. Pupils engage in a broad range of activities designed to enhance their physical competence and confidence. Through skill-specific lesson plans, children learn to master basic movements and apply them in various contexts, laying the groundwork for more complex physical activities.

Key Stage 2

In KS2, we aim to develop pupils' flexibility, strength, technique, control, and balance through a diverse range of sports and physical activities. Our curriculum offers sport-specific lessons that cater to different abilities, ensuring all children are challenged and supported. Pupils participate in competitive games, learn to evaluate and improve their performances, and understand the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle.

Assessment

At Waterloo Primary Academy, we utilise the Amaven assessment tool that can be completed in a single PE lesson, conducted three times per year, to monitor pupils' development. This allows us to track progress throughout a pupil's school life, give the pupils an opportunity to beat their personal best which adheres to the ‘School Games’ initiative and improve the teaching and learning of PE.

Our progression of skills maps ensures that each lesson is carefully planned to match the developmental stage of the pupils, promoting continuous improvement.

We hold high expectations for all pupils, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to succeed in PE. Our lessons are fully inclusive to cater to varying abilities, and we provide a wide range of extracurricular activities to encourage participation beyond the classroom.

We recognise the importance of supporting pupils' well-being both in school and at home. Through the Amaven website, pupils (and their parents) have access to activities that contribute to the recommended 60 minutes of daily physical activity. The online resource offers resources to develop agility, balance, coordination, strength, flexibility, and provides guidance on healthy eating and emotional well-being, ensuring a holistic approach to health.

  1. By the time pupils leave Waterloo Primary Academy, they will have developed a comprehensive understanding of physical education, equipped with the skills, confidence, and enthusiasm to engage in a wide range of physical activities. Our commitment to a high-quality PE education ensures that all pupils are prepared to lead healthy, active lives and appreciate the value of physical fitness and wellbeing.
